Volunteer Information and Requirements

To ensure a safe and supportive environment for all students and staff, all volunteers are required to complete the Volunteer Application Form and review the Volunteer Guidelines annually. These forms are in place to protect everyone involved—students, staff, and volunteers alike.

All volunteers are subject to a basic background screening conducted through the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (MN BCA) or local law enforcement agencies. In some cases—such as volunteer coaching or attending overnight field trips or retreats—a full criminal history background check may be required. This check is processed through the MN BCA and costs $15.00, which must be paid by the volunteer. Please note: State statute prohibits the school district from covering this cost.

If a background check reveals criminal convictions, we follow the guidelines set forth in MN Statute 245C.15: Disqualifying Crimes and Conduct to determine volunteer eligibility. Convictions not listed in this statute, but that are more recent than 10 years and involve minors, will be reviewed with additional scrutiny.

Our goal with this volunteer process is to be consistent and:

  • account for all volunteers in each of our school buildings,
  • accurately record all volunteer work hours, and
  • maintain a safe and healthy environment in the school district.

Volunteers play a vital role in the success of our schools. Your time, talents, and dedication make a meaningful difference for our students and staff.

Thank you for choosing to volunteer with Brainerd Public Schools!
